What is Monaghan Women in Business?

Monaghan Women in Business (MWIB) is an informal network which is open to all women in business and in management positions in County Monaghan and surrounding areas. Our aim is to provide information, support, promotional and networking opportunities to all who take part.

We welcome businesses at all stages of development – from pre-start up to internationally established operators.

Events

We welcomed over 60 Monaghan Women in Business to our 2017 Launch on 8th March – International Women’s Day – as part of National Enterprise Week. See details of our 2017 Launch here.  From April on we meet on a monthly basis – usually on the first Tuesday of each month – at venues throughout County Monaghan.  Our events include –

  • Presentaions by expert Guest Speakers – materials are frequently posted to our Resources Page so that you can access and refer to them at a later stage
  • Networking opportnities (always bring your business cards!)
  • Exhibits by Monaghan Women in Business member businesses
  • A social element with refreshments.  This may be in the event venue or in the cafe or restaurant premises of a Monaghan Women in Business member

Membership

For now there is no formal membership registration.  All women in business – or who have an interest in business development – can just come along to our meetings, introduce themselves and become part of this great support network.

In 2016 a total of 159 individual business women attended our 9 events throughout the year.    As many people attended all or many different events, the total attendance at events was 330+.   It is notable that a number of women travelled from as far away as Belfast to attend numerous events throughout the year.

Fees for Events

There is no formal membership structure and no membership fee.  Our annual launch on International Women’s Day is part of National Enterprise week is free of charge.  Attendance at monthly meetings thereafter is on a per meeting basis.  Our fee is €10 per meeting.  This includes –

  • Participation in the presentation by an expert speaker or theme panel
  • The opportunity to exhibit at the event
  • Networking opportunities
  • Refreshments

The programme is funded by Monaghan Local Enterprise Office. To facilitate catering arrangements, you are requested to register for each event via the Monaghan Local Enterprise Office website prior to the event.

Our venue was the recently refurbished Gate Lodge at Hope Castle.  Gaye’s very interactive presentation was followed by delicious refreshments and further networking at Eileen’s Tea Rooms.

Communications 101 Masterclass – Margaret Considine

Well, we had another illuminating and most enjoyable Masterclass with the incomparable Margaret Considine, EQuita Consulting, when Margaret treated us to her very valuable “Communications 101 Materclass” in the beautiful Ballybay Wetlands Centre.   Twenty three great Monaghan Women in Business attended – learned and had fun.  Thank you to Margaret and all who attended and to the Wetlands Centre for their wonderful care and hospitality.  Catch some of the action on “Attending Skills” here.

Finance and Tapas for Monaghan Women in Business

Rose Tierney Monaghan Women in BusinessTo kick start the Monaghan Women in Business Autumn Programme we  got right down to the most basic and essentially important business theme i.e. FINANCE.

One of the commonly cited causes of business failure among female entrepreneurs is lack of proper financing.  Even where businesses survive, they frequently fail to develop and reach their full potential due to lack of adequate finance.

At our September meeting, experienced accountant,  tax adviser and Monaghan Women in Business member – Rose Tierney – gave us the low down on how to assess our business and personal finances and how to effectively plan for our financial future – thus improving the opportunities for our businesses and our own personal quality of life, now and in the years ahead.

Rose did an amazing job and got a lot of us thinking about where we are and where we are headed in financial terms.  She shared a wealth of knowledge and expertise with us and took a very practical approach to financial management and planning.

Rose very kindly shared her presentation materials with us and you can check them out – along with other useful resources –here.  Not as good as being at the event but very useful nonetheless.

After Rose’s presentation and Q+A session we adjourned to Paula’s Deery’s lovely Tapas de Noche to enjoy delicious tapas and a further meaningful networking opportunity.  Another great event for Monaghan Women in Business!

90 Minute Masterclass:  Successful Negotiation Skills for Business and for Life

Monaghan Women in Business enjoyed another stimulating and very relevant event in The Westenra Arms Hotel on Tuesday 5th July.

Margaret Considine, EQuita Consulting Limited, presented an excellent 90 Minute Master Class: Successful Negotiation Skills for Business and for Life.  We had a great attendance – lots of networking – a lovely exhibit by Eleanor Carleton, Just Sew Now.

Margaret has very kindly provided us with some follow up materials to the event.  These are available to view/download on The Monaghan Women in Business resources page.

We are taking a little break in August and will be back in action to launch our Autumn Programme on Tuesday 6th September.  In the meantime, here are a few photos of our Negotiation Masterclass to give you a flavour of the event.

Our Guest Speakers for the evening, Maria Macklin, House of Colour Monaghan Louth, and Mairead Flynn, Ways to Wellness did not disappoint.

Mairead’s presentation included two short practices and guidance on how to integrate mindfulness into a busy working life.

We definitely all enjoyed our May event!

Another great evening was enjoyed by all in The Market House on Tuesday 3rd May.  Our expert panel from local businesses, which included Jamie-Lee McGirl – Petshop Online, Claire Cunnigham – Aura Internet Services, Paul Bond – Brix Workwear and Eilín Connolly, Local Enterprise Office Monaghan, informed and entertained the 30+Monaghan Women in Business who participated in the event.

This was followed by delicious refreshments in the beautiful neighbouring Hungry Monk Asian Restaurant.  There we also enjoyed a great exhibit of Emmalisa Duffy’s Name Art Mania products.

We’re getting lots of positive feedback about the event and enquiries about our June event.  Monaghan Women in Business June event – themed “Outside In” – will focus on health and wellbeing, physical, emotional and mental.
